Homeowners and Landlords

Supporting Homeowners and Private Landlords

Sharply rising energy costs, changing legislation and a growing need to cut carbon emissions have all made it more important than ever to make homes more energy efficient. Sustainable Building Services is one of the country’s largest and most experienced energy efficiency contractors. TrustMark-registered and compliant with all the latest industry standards, we’re ideally placed to help you cut your energy bills.

Energy Efficiency Measures

Without any doubt, the most cost-effective way to reduce energy use is to
improve your home’s ability to retain heat. Government and industry sources
recommend this as crucial first step. It’s known as the ‘fabric first’ approach.

Examples of important measures to improve the building fabric include:

  • Insulation (various forms)
    • External wall insulation
    • Internal wall insulation
    • Cavity wall insulation
    • Loft and ‘room in roof’ insulation
    • Floor insulation
  • Draught-proofing
  • Replacement doors and windows

Money spent here will typically deliver larger and faster savings than spending on
most other measures, including renewable energy systems. However, there is
still a vital role to be played by these other technologies, and we will
gladly help you with those too.

Examples:

  • Low energy lighting
  • Air source and ground-source heat pumps
  • Solar photovoltaic panels

The Retrofit Journey

New industry standards mean that installers working on publicly funded projects should fit the technologies that deliver the most effective savings. That way, any funding is spent responsibly and householders get the measures that work best for them.

In practical terms, this means that the process of retro-fitting energy efficiency measures should begin with a survey and assessment of the property in question. Then, specific plans can be drawn up and implemented by accredited installers, all under the watch of an independent Retrofit Coordinator, who ensures a tight focus on quality and value

Grants and Funding

Public funding streams change frequently, and your entitlement to grants or other forms of support can vary by local authority area. However, the good news is that there are several important sources of funding currently available, some of which can benefit homeowners, landlords or both.

For more details, please see our Grants and Funding page.

Our Work

We deliver much of our work through projects funded by local authorities, housing associations and similar organisations. However, we also support private homeowners and landlords nationwide.

We can deliver all the same services for private clients as we do for social housing providers. And as the costs of energy keep rising, so the ‘payback periods’ (how long it takes for the energy savings to pay for the original work) get shorter and shorter.

However, the savings can be even greater in cases where we’re already delivering work in the local area through a project for a social housing provider. If we have staff, vehicles and materials already on site, then the costs of treating one or more additional private properties can be greatly reduced. We make sure that those cost savings are passed on to you.

We also make sure that, wherever appropriate, our work is supported by relevant guarantees. For example, on all internal and external wall insulation projects, we can offer a 25-year guarantee supported by SWIGA, the Solid Wall Insulation Guarantee Association.

We have developed very effective resident liaison procedures. These have been instrumental in enabling us to deliver complex schemes on (or ahead of) schedule. They have also played a key role in securing exceptionally high customer satisfaction scores.
