Health & Safety

We have an excellent record on Health & Safety. Our safety-first philosophy is a key priority; one that is adhered to by every employee, supplier and subcontractor that works with us.

We are accredited under the Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme (CHAS) and we are Safe
Contractor approved. We are also a member of the British Safety Council, and our head office has been
awarded ISO 18001 accreditation for occupational health and safety.
Our various sites are registered with the Considerate Constructors scheme.

Safety Training

Safe working practices begin with training, and our internal procedures are geared to ensure that all SBS staff are equipped with an excellent understanding of how to perform their roles with the minimum of risk.

Not only do staff undergo routine safety training and regular ‘toolbox talks’, but before any operative is allowed to enter a site and commence work, he or she must complete a site-specific safety induction. Safety is our number one key performance indicator. It’s the first item on our every agenda, and all staff are encouraged to report any risks or ‘near miss’ accidents so that we can continuously improve our processes and the working environment.

Subcontractor Safety

We have a well-established UK network of subcontractors and material suppliers whose safety credentials we carefully verify. We only appoint subcontractors who sign up to our Health & Safety policy and can demonstrate an excellent safety record.

Resident / Public Safety

As part of our community engagement and tenant liaison procedures, we produce site-specific literature for local residents and building occupants. This explains the safety risks associated with our work and the importance of respecting site signage and fenced boundaries. Where possible, we also engage with local schools and give presentations to pupils about the dangers of construction sites.
